Much as Harald has said, just because WoAI is closing up shop doesn't mean you can't achieve the same result, albeit with a bit of extra work. The models are still available, the paints are still available, the flightplans are available, and the tools to put it all together are still there. It's the convenience that's going to be missing, is all.
There's a lot more to AI than just the big iron anyways - WoAI doesn't really address the GA side of things as well as what you can do yourself, and once you start doing it yourself, you find it's really satisfying to have that level of control over it. Of course, if any of it was quick and easy, there would be no payware! Jim, Unless things have changed, in their closing announcement on their website the developers say all files will be removed from AVSIM and flightsim.com. Rbirtel, I would go to WoAI, download all the airline and GA files you want to have, download their installer tool, then install those airline packages onto your sim. The nice thing about doing that is the WoAI installer will install all the aircraft models and textures in a matter of seconds.
If you ever want up to update flight plans for ult AI, you can download those from the AVSIM library then use the aircraft textures downloaded from WoAI. I also recommend downloading the AI Flight Planner 2 utility, which let's you modify flight plans, add textures to your aircraft.txt file, etc. It's like TTools on steroids. Then, just update your AI flight plans airline by airline. For the most part, most people don't really pay attention to whether the AI aircraft are flying current schedules or not. So, if you want to keep it simple just use the original WoAI and don't change anything.
Hi, I'd prefer to build my own AI traffic from available flightplans (AIG, United Traffic Team.) and repaints. Although not as sophisticated as WoAI, I think that is quite the same WoAI did. Of course you need a certain amount of time to build up your traffic but it has the advantage that you can keep your system in naming files, folder structures, internal structures of aircraft.cfg and TTools source files. Harald I prefer this too. It's slightly more time consuming but it's definitely more rewarding when you see your work come to 'life' in the simulator. I agree with the previous comments about building your own AI traffic system using the excellent AIG flight schedules etc, BUT I alert you to the fact that if you are using FSX with the DX10 preview activated, then many of the older WoAI aircraft models will appear pure white at your airports. DX10, of course requiring a compatible video card, provides greatly improved visuals and is the way of the future for FSX, but it does introduce new issues about which you can google on the Net.
One of which is aircraft textures where in many cases the texture has to be changed from DXT3 to DXT1. Most of theAI FruitStand aircraft are compatible, but many of the AIA are not. The plus side of this change is far less memory impact on your system which means improved framerates and operation at large airports. The effort to build your own system is repaid in spades by having total control on flightplans and updating aircraft to the best models available.
