At that time I said STOP, no way I would put additional 550 USD on top of the 100 USD already spend on this issue. So I began looking into each of the applications not working and started searching the web for any message with Journal, Inking etc., not only looking into the Snipping issue.

And the Inking got me a hit on the page: I thought that solution could be tested even on my old Office 2003 installation. Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience. Hi Try refreshing the installation for the Snipping Tool. This tool is part of the Tablet PC Optional Components in Windows Vista.

Open Control Panel, click the Classic View in the Tasks Pane. Double click Programs and Features. Click the 'Turn Windows features on and off' in the Task Pane. This window may take a couple of minutes to display. When the options appear in the list, scroll down to the 'Tablet PC Optional Components' and remove the check mark from that item. Click OK, exit everything and reboot the computer. This will uninstall the 'Snipping Tool' from the system.

After the computer restarts, go back into Control Panel and repeat the same procedure, this time add the check mark to the 'Tablet PC Optional Components'. This will install these components in the system with a fresh copy of all the files. Hope this helps. Ronnie Vernon Microsoft MVP Windows Desktop Experience. Senthil I still haven't been able to find any more viable information on this behavior. I am starting to think that it may be a problem with the installer. The only thing I can suggest, at the moment, is to make sure that the system is up to date with everything on Windows Update. Is your system also configured with a Domain?

Rebooting the system solves the issue. Is this a known issue with Microsoft?

Hi Johan I have been researching the problem with the Snipping Tool and the Tablet PC optional components in Vista for the last few days. The main problem I have seen is the one where a custom install of Microsoft Office, 2003 or 2007, has caused problems, such as the one described in this thread.

The other thing I noticed, that really 'jumped out at me' is that problems seem to be much more numerous on systems that use a 'passive digitizer' as opposed to an 'active digitizer'. I don't remember seeing any general memory problems such as the one you describe. Are you using a Tablet PC?

If you are, what brand and model number is it? If this post helps to resolve your issue, click the Mark as Answer button at the top of this message. Vista SP1 x86 (clean install, not upgrade from pre-SP1).

I do not have the tablet components installed, as this is a non-table laptop. Sometimes it runs, sometimes it doesn't, and gives that error. Just now it ran, captured an area, I selected new on it to capture a second area and it died (vanished). It is just flaky software, not a permissions/installation thing. Every time I try and run it, I kick myself for wasting my time. Print Screen does a better job.

Just use CTRL-ALT-PrintScreen! Warder wrote: It happens to me. Vista SP1 x86 (clean install, not upgrade from pre-SP1).

You do not need to be running a Tablet PC to install these tools. On a normal Laptop or Desktop PC, these tools will allow you to use several of the Tablet components such as the snipping tool and the Microsoft Journal.

You can even use 'Ink' in the Journal application, although you will be writing with the mouse instead of a tablet pen. This also enables handwriting recognition on a Non-Tablet PC, if you attach a Pen Digitizer. Sometimes it runs, sometimes it doesn't, and gives that error. Print Screen just doesn't give you the advanced options that the snipping tool does. With print Screen, if you want to just capture a small area of the screen, then you need to use a program such as Paint to crop the screen shot.

The snipping tool can do this automatically. If this post helps to resolve your issue, click the Mark as Answer button at the top of this message. Then after a day or two, I'd get the dreaded ' The Snipping Tool is not working on your computer right now' message. A reboot would fix it.

Then it would eventually happen again. I tried Office Diagnostics but to no avail. However, I just noticed, that when I get this message, if I fire up the Task Manager there would be an entry for SnippingTool in the list of images in the Process tab. If I were to kill that process, I would be able to restart the tool.:) Not sure if this'll work for everybody, but I thought it might be worth a try. I have uninstalled Office 2007 and I still get this error. Also did the disable and re-enable tablet PC support feature. Any new info on this?

My snipper just snapped it's spin too. My bet 100.9% is a problem exists with Outlook specifically, and Office generally corrupting [almost antique] DCOM as filtered through run32.dll on x32 and x64 systems trying to support any Palette PC apps without dedicated hardware feedback to the system core. That's just the superficial assessment, and this problem goes much deeper. Vista perks us on native installs with three working Palette apps: you can fully expect that DCOM instability is going to neuter the run-time hooks that enable those apps. Sure the tools are useful.

Complain to Microsoft? In perspective, why would Microsoft fix what it does not see as a problem? For virtually all healthcare providers in the digital age, Palette PC is an Accessibility Utility.

So again, ask yourself why would Microsoft deploy millions of dollars maintaining something for a platform that is trying to do something that is not a product of its social purpose? System techs at our hospital use the snipping tool failure as a specific flag that it is time to reinstall the active system bridge Winows installation (casually, a weekly event, sometimes daily). Pallette hardware is fortunately a last recourse for most of us.

Microsoft Expression has Expression Encoder 3 available for free download and bundled with various Expression softwares - it will even encode the tune you are listening to during your snapshot! Posting into countless forays will likely, very likely help none of us. (Until maybe one day Microsoft will consider the 'market extensibility' of a reliable snipping tool, which we all know the current one is absolutely not, with good reason.) Note: for those ernest enough to go out and purchase hardware, don't expect miracles. People with disabilities and their care providers know only too well that software Accessibility is a catch word for 'tax breaks with minimal expense', except for the providers of very expensive dedicated software and systems. With Washington always getting ready to pay back to insurance corporations what it has already paid them to cover the cost of ongoing political contributions, and with the colony's trillion dollar war budget fixed to secure a similar trans-Atlantic venue, it is not likely any letters to Givernment to beef up Accessibility paybacks will escape the paper-shreddder for a good long time to come.

Hi all, I THINK I CRACKED THIS ONE! I've gnashed my teeth with frustration because of the same probelm with the snipping tool and couldn't get any solution online: I run Windows 7 Ultimate on my laptop. I have established the following: The snipping tool stops working only when (1) a browser is running (Firefox or Internet Explorer). As soon as I close all browsers on my laptop the snipping tool starts working again. (2) when PrevX with SafeOnline (an anti-malware program) is running. When I 'stop protection' by PrevX the snipping tool starts running again!

Therefore, the snipping tool seems to be blocked by anti-malware programs that are meant to protect one from spyware by, among other things, blocking remote users from taking snap-shots of your desktop. If you want to take a snap shot of your screen while browsing you need to either: (1) Close all browsers IF the snap shot you want is not a website (2) Disable the anti-spyware program protecting your browser TEMPORARILY and resume protection after taking your snapshot. I don't advise changing the settings of your anti-spyware program as blocking of the snipping tool is a safety feature (I suspect it can be run silently on one's PC by some malware). I hope this helps others! After extensive Google/Binging I finally tripped upon my solution. I have Windows 7 Ultimate and Office 2010 Professional.

I tried various solutions online without success: • Reboot • Repair Office 2010 (no, I didn't uninstall and reinstall) • SFC /SCANNOW (no issues found) • The 'Remove, then add Tablet PC Components' in Control Panel Programs and Features/Turn On Windows Features • Close any and all Browsers (no success) Then it occurred to me that OneNote has a drawing feature. I suspected this was related to Tablet PC Inking Components, since my search showed people also had problems with Windows Journal. I also had problems with Windows Journal, indicating the Inking Components problem. In OneNote I went to the drawing ribbon and attempted to draw when a popup declared I didn't have Tablet PC features installed (even though I checked that); and offered to install it (Yes!). Oddly, it asked for the DVD for FrontPage 2003, which I also have installed. Who would have guessed, but that was my solution. I hope this helps someone.

I have had this problem off and on in Vista HP. Previously I tried subtracting then adding back Tablet to MS Office, rebooting, which both work for a while until it stops working again. My machine is stable and does not need error-driven rebooting, often for months.

It is regularly updated. During the last two days snipping tool was not working and suggested a reboot.

I did not want to reboot. Today, this approach worked: create a shortcut (I keep it in the quick launch bar) to the process: C: Windows System32 SnippingTool.exe Run the program using the short cut (this also worked without shortcut using the run command). I have UAC turned off all the time and have administrative privileges. One may need to change permission on the program for other users or with UAC on.

Snippingtool.exe was not shown as running in task manager when I ran the program from the shortcut. I don't know why this worked. The default shortcut is almost identical to the one I created except that it references the system folder using path variables from the environment. I used an absolute path name. Place Port's suggestion (Jan 5, 2012) was almost perfect for me. I'm in the same situation with Vista Enterprise Service Pack 2, HP 8440P, 4 GB memory.

SnippingTool would fail after capturing several images while I had spreadsheets and other applications open (possible memory leak?). The run command didn't work the first time and then I browsed to C: Windows System32 and double-clicked SnippingTool.exe and it worked. Subsequent starts via the run command and my pre-exising shortcut also worked. All without a reboot!!! Thanks Place Port!! Guys, There is a very simple solution to this issue provided, this issue creates another issue mentioned below - 1. When you get this Snipping Tool Issue, open Paint and copy the screen on to the clipboard using CTRL + C.

And then try to Paste this using CTRL + V. You may get another error as - 'Unable to get Data from CLipboard' or something like that. If you get this error try step 1 & 2 few more times and Open Snipping Tool now, Your original error of snipping tool may not appear. It may be a stupid resolution but this has worked at least 7 - 8 times for me.
