Jan 25, 2013. I bought a Rega Planar 3 a few weeks ago with a Linn Basik LV V tonearm (original installation). Recently got around to setting it up and discovered. Keith Monk tone arm. Unipivot design and the only one that uses Mercury to transfer the music signals from the detachable arm wand to the pivoting pillar. The automatic start does not work so have to do it manually. Denon DP55 direct drive turntable with Linn Basik LVV tone arm.
So how about the AKITO?. 'Gives great insight into all types of music, open and spacious presentation and commanding pitch and rhythmic control; dynamic range; subjectively superior to Rega RB300 and Roksan Tabriz.' — What Hi-Fi magazine (1990)... 'A sharp analytical performance, excellent sense of timing.' — What Hi-Fi magazine (1991)....
'Easy to install and use, it's sound is better suited to wood based decks like the LP12 but it is capable of good results in most situations.' — Hi-Fi Choice magazine.... Best in British audio technology. It is a fine example of an AKITO pick-up arm in very good condition and full working order.
Anyone who wants to upgrade the old LP12 needs one of these! More value than any other upgrades! This is one of the most fundamental Linn upgrades. If you are still using the old Linn LVV, LVX, or LVX Plus (Basik PLus) pick-up arm, or any other non- Linn tonearm you don't know what your Sondek LP12 turntable is capable of yet!. The AKITO has an improved bearings with low friction - it is really superior! It suits MC cartridges better than the earlier Linn tonearms..
Akito is a very good arm indeed (read the reviews by What Hi-Fi & Hi-Fi Choice magazines), and buy a Denon MC cartridge eg. DL-103, you'll have a set up that you'll be pleased to live with for a long time.. I have owned many other brands (turntable) but will always go back to Linn because I felt that there is always something 'missing' (? ) with other brands. I bought a Rega Planar 3 a few weeks ago with a Linn Basik LV V tonearm (original installation). Recently got around to setting it up and discovered the vernier ring/tracking force is missing. Looking to replace/upgrade the tonearm with something that is a drop in installation, no modifications.
The obvious choices are a Linn LV X or Akito. The Linn tonearms require a 25mm (~1in) mounting hole with a mounting distance of 211mm (~8.25in). Serial Ecg Frequency. Any other tonearm suggestions? $200-$400 used? I like the look, simplicity and smooth belt drive operation of the Planar 3. Is it just the ring on the counterweight that is missing or the entire counterweight? You have named the obvious ones that would be an easy swap.
I don't know what others might fit without modification. If I were doing it, I would probably look for an Akito. While I acknowledge the superiority of the more rigid LVX and Akito arms, I like to swap cartridges from time to time and would enjoy having that convenience which comes with the LVV arm. If you purchase another Linn arm, and keep the LVV, you could have the convenience of a quick arm swap if that interests you at all. Best regards.
