Let me introduce you a simple tool for programming Baofeng handhelds via a serial or USB programming cable. It's a command line utility, which can reliably save the memory image of the radio to binary file, and restore it back later. The configuration is also printed to text file in self-documented readable format. The configuration file can be modified by the user, and then programmed to the station.

Hi Sergey, I was just wondering if this software is any better than the Boafeng software they ship.I can only get the older Boafeng version to work, sometimes. Seems the serial port times out while doing a download from the radio to the computer and other Boafeng users often complain. This 'error' happens anywhere from 30% to 98% complete so it's very frustrating. I had even worse luck with the CHIRP software. Hi John, Native Baofeng software is somewhat cryptic, and requires too much mouse/keyboard actions to configure something meaningful.

I tested Baoclone on Windows 7, Linux and Mac OS X, with UV-R5A, UV-B5 and BF-888S - it worked pretty stable. People also reported it works with UV-82 and BF-666S. In you case, the instability might be related to fake Prolific chip.
