San Francisco, Calif. -- Visio Corp. Announced that two leading building controls vendors, Alerton Technologies Inc. And Echelon Corp., have selected Visio's technical drawing software, Visio Technical 5.0, as the platform for their respective visual control logic programming solutions. 'We are excited that two top vendors in building controls technology have standardized on Visio Technical to offer the best visual-based programming tools for their customers,' said Mark Sherman, group product manager of the technical products unit at Visio.
'These are model demonstrations of the power of Visio technology and how it can be extended to meet very distinct customer needs.' Visio Technical's programmability and support for Microsoft Windows-based technology are instrumental in positioning the product as a standard platform for custom visual programming solutions in the building and HVAC controls market. The use of visual programming tools in designing industrial control logic eliminates the tedious process of manually coding cryptic, hard-to-understand machine instructions. Visio's drag-and-drop visual metaphor, combined with built-in Microsoft Visual Basic Applications Edition (VBA) and complete support for Microsoft ActiveX Automation, is ideal for creating this type of tool. In the Alerton and Echelon solutions, the programmer visually designs the necessary control logic inside the Visio Technical-based application using custom shapes and Visio SmartConnectors technology. Once the control logic diagram has been drawn, the application automatically generates the complex controller-specific code and downloads the code into the control equipment.
The controller can then send information back to the Visio drawing in real time to aid in the debugging of these complex control loops. Visio Technical 5.0 serves as the foundation for the newest versions of VisualLogic, Alerton's visual logic programming tool. VisualLogic generates control logic for the BACtalk system, Alerton's open data communications technology for building automation and control networks. In customizing Visio Technical 5.0, Alerton created custom graphic symbols, stencils and templates to represent the BACtalk logic control models, and further employed Visio Technical's built-in VBA in creating the VisualLogic programming tool. Visio Technical 5.0 also serves as the platform for Echelon Corp.'
S LonMaker for Windows tool, an application used in designing, installing and maintaining LONWORKS control networks. LonMaker for Windows allows users to set up and configure LONWORKS networks, which are used to distribute communications and control among sensors and actuators in control systems. An Echelon-developed Microsoft Visual C++-based program controls Visio Technical's behavior and appearance via Microsoft ActiveX Automation. By using Visio Technical as a graphica 'front end,' LonMaker for Windows supports a sophisticated yet user-friendly custom application that eliminates the need for users to perform any programming.
Alerton VisualLogic Display (VLD) is a communicating sensor/controller with built-in humidity sensor and optional wireless capability. It combines the functionality of a VisualLogic Controller (VLC) with a programmable user interface display. Electrical inputs and outputs wire directly to field equipment, and the control sequence is programmable using Envision for BACtalk’s direct digital control (DDC) language, VisualLogic. DDC is programmed and downloaded to the controller using an Envision for BACtalk operator workstation. Operational information and control data is available to other building controllers and systems through the BACnet protocol (ANSI/ASHRAE standard). This enables a VLD to share data and execute commands initiated from other BACnet-compliant devices.
